By leveraging Visa Intelligent Commerce, a framework that enables AI agents to securely make card-based payments, and x402, the internet-native payments protocol developed by Coinbase, the pilot gives AI agents persistent delegated spending authority on card rails and allows merchants to accept payments directly through their existing payment infrastructure.

For publishers, data providers, and digital service companies, this solves a problem that has been growing quickly and largely gone unanswered. AI agents increasingly search, read, compare, and act across the internet, but there has been no practical way for a publisher to sell a single article, a single dataset query, or a single premium API response to a machine. The result has been a broken choice:  block agents entirely and lose demand, or allow machine consumption without a real way to monetize it.

With this launch, AI agents can now request and pay for discrete digital assets through x402 with Nevermined-powered payments, while merchants receive card payments through their existing PSP, like Stripe. That creates potential for new revenue streams for internet businesses whose products are increasingly being consumed by software, not just people.

To enable this, users and businesses can bring their own Visa cards, enroll them through Visa Intelligent Commerce integration, and authorize AI agents to spend within clearly defined rules. Those rules can include total budget limits, per-purchase caps, merchant restrictions, and time-based validity windows. In practice, that means agents can carry spending authority allowing them to do real work without constant human intervention, while the cardholder still controls how the money is used.

The launch helps shift the revenue potential for a large number of merchants that have the possibility of accepting AI agent-based payments. This solution closes that gap by enabling direct acceptance through the merchant’s existing payment service provider.
